An exhibition showing the influence of Egyptian art and culture on other civilisations opens at Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive on Saturday 7 February.
The art, religion and society of ancient Egypt have fascinated other cultures for more than 3,000 years and this new exhibition reveals the depth of this fascination.
Egyptomania shows a range of material from Roman sculpture and Victorian china and silverware to modern costume jewellery, tourist souvenirs and smoking paraphernalia – all influenced by Egypt.
To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, there will be a special Egyptomania Week during February half term (Saturday 14 February to Saturday 21 February).
The week of events is aimed at the whole family and is packed with fun, free activities focussing on ancient Egypt and how it has influenced the modern world.
The whole family can take part in quizzes, have a go at object handling and enter a competition to win a fantastic prize, including a behind the scenes tour with our Egyptologist. Visitors can also quiz the museum assistants and learn some fantastic Egyptian facts.
A variety of activities will take place each day, including Egyptian badge making, hieroglyph stencilling, face painting, pyramid building and a chance to make a Death Mask like the ones on display in the museum.
There’s also a family-friendly Egyptian talk on Saturday 14 February and wonderful Egyptian stories to be told on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (17 to 19 February).
As well as the special activities, the whole family can look round the Ancient Egypt Gallery which is renowned for having a fantastic collection and, of course, visit the museum’s latest exhibition Egyptomania which runs until Saturday 9 May.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm and is free to get in.
Also during half term Smithills Hall will be attracting visitors with free entry for all grandparents when accompanied by their grandchildren on Friday 20 February and Sunday 22 February and free entry for all children on these days (normally £1.75). At Hall i’ th’ Wood on Saturday 21 February and Sunday 22 February families can go back in time and take part in fun Tudor games and take a tour of the museum with the Hall’s very own Tudor character.
