No. 141/2009

Popular TV presenter Johnny Ball is to return to his childhood home to launch Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive’s major summer exhibition – Simple Beginnings: The Story of Evolution.

As 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the exhibition focuses on the British scientist and looks at the theory of evolution.

Simple Beginnings: The Story of Evolution is part of Darwin200, a national programme celebrating Charles Darwin’s life, his ideas and their impact around his 200th anniversary.

Visitors can discover who Darwin was and find out some fascinating facts about him, including how he got his ideas on evolution and what influenced his thinking; the impact of his theory and its connections to Bolton; and about his 19th Century supporters and opponents.

The exhibition will be launched on Saturday, June 13 with a special guest appearance by Johnny Ball at 1pm, followed by a free talk on the life and work of Charles Darwin by Johnny between 2pm and 3pm.

As well as TV presenting, Johnny has been involved in science education for more than 30 years and is heavily involved in the Darwin bicentennial events.

Originally from Bristol, Johnny moved to Bolton as a child and attended Bolton County Grammar School. He was a regular visitor to Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive as a teenager and went on to become a comedian before carving out a career in television and popularising maths and science among viewers of all ages.

Simple Beginnings: The Story of Evolution is free to view and runs until Saturday 7 November.

There will be a number of family-friendly activities throughout the afternoon, including free tours of the exhibition and a chance to get up close to some amazing insects.

A wide range of events to accompany the exhibition will also run throughout the summer, including free evening and lunchtime lectures and plenty of activities, from worm whispering to bat hunting and object handling to fun arts and crafts sessions.
